Industrial Dust Collection Systems for Woodworking

US Duct designs, manufactures and delivers industrial dust collection systems for woodworking plants, from the capture hood to the collector. Dust collection in the woodworking industry is more than moving air. Every branch and main has to hold transport velocity so chips, sanding dust and MDF fines stay suspended, and the system has to address combustible dust risk under NFPA 664. We engineer woodworking dust collection systems around your machines, materials and layout, with clamp-together duct that installs up to 70% faster, Legend separators and collectors, and 24-hour quotes through DuctQuote.

Woodworking Applications

Is Your Woodworking Dust Collection System Holding Back Plant Performance?

More machines mean more chips, more fine dust and more waste to move. A system that kept up with three machines rarely keeps up with ten. If drops are losing suction, bags are loading fast or waste handling is eating labor hours, the system needs engineering, not another patch.

Your woodworking operation is growing. You’ve added exciting machinery that makes operations more efficient and allows your woodworking facility to expand. And then you realize.... The faster you make product, the more dust and waste your shop needs to manage.

THE Problem

Is Your Dust Collection Mitigating Combustible Wood Dust Risk?

You have mastered making great products. Dust collection is a different discipline. Wood dust is combustible, sanding fines settle in low-velocity runs, and every machine you add changes the airflow balance of the whole system. Questions plant managers and dealers bring us:

  • Can the current woodworking dust collection system handle the machines we run today, or the ones we are adding?
  • Should we retrofit the existing system or design a new one?
  • Why are some drops pulling hard while others barely pull at all?
  • Is dust settling in the mains because transport velocity has dropped?
  • How do we cut the labor and downtime spent on bag changes and waste handling?
  • How do we design with awareness of NFPA 664 and OSHA combustible dust guidance?
    ‍
THE SOLUTION

How US Duct Engineers Dust Collection for Woodworking Plants

US Duct has designed dust collection systems for woodworking plants from single-machine shops to multi-line production facilities. We look at the whole system, not just the duct.

‍

Woodworking Dust Collection Systems, Machine to Collector

A woodworking dust collection system works only as well as its weakest point. Here is how US Duct builds one, from the capture point forward.

1. Capture at the machine

Every machine gets a hood matched to how it throws material. That means router hoods for CNC routers, radial arm saw hoods, and canopy hoods where material leaves in many directions. Floor sweeps handle bench and floor cleanup. Ball joints and swivel joints follow moving heads. Flex hose is kept as short as possible, because every foot adds static pressure.

2. Size each drop for airflow

Required CFM at each machine equals port area times transport velocity. At 4,000 FPM, a 4-inch port needs about 350 CFM, a 5-inch port about 545 CFM and a 6-inch port about 785 CFM. System CFM is the sum of the machines that actually run at the same time, not every machine on the floor.

3. Hold transport velocity in branches and mains

Fine, dry wood dust needs roughly 3,500 to 4,000 FPM to stay suspended. Chips, damp or green wood waste and dense MDF dust need roughly 4,000 to 4,500 FPM. Branches enter the main through clamp-together laterals and wyes at shallow angles, not 90-degree tees, to limit pressure loss. The main steps up in diameter as branches join, so velocity holds from the farthest machine to the collector. Blast gates close idle drops so open drops keep their velocity.

4. Choose the right duct

Our standard clamp-together duct comes in Galvanized Steel or Stainless Steel in 18 to 24 Gauge. Heavy Gauge construction, up to 10 Gauge, is available for green wood and abrasive material. Flanged ductwork handles large-diameter mains and permanent infrastructure. Every clamp-together component is field-adjustable, so the system can be rerouted when the floor layout changes.

5. Protect and pre-separate before the collector

A spark trap stops sparks before they reach the collector. The Legend Inline Separator uses centrifugal force and reduced air velocity to capture up to 90% of debris before it reaches the bags. That means longer bag life, fewer bag changes and steadier collector performance. See the Legend Inline Separator spec sheet, or compare inline separators vs. cyclones.

6. Collect, discharge and isolate

The Legend Baghouse Collector uses even-fill distribution, abrasion-resistant bags and manual shaker cleaning in a compact footprint. Dustek dust collectors cover smaller footprints. A rotary airlock meters waste out while holding the pressure differential. The Legend Quick-Change Hopper cuts bag-change time. Explosion isolation, such as a no-return valve on the collector inlet, keeps a deflagration from traveling back into the plant. After the fan, a no-loss stack or rain cap finishes the exhaust.

7. See it before it ships

Every system is drawn in DuctQuote, our free 3D design and quoting tool. You get static calculations, a bill of materials, an order of install and a quote within 24 hours. Then we build it in the USA to your exact specs.

NFPA 664 and Combustible Wood Dust: What the System Has to Do

Woodworking facilities often face combustible dust challenges governed by NFPA 664, the standard for the prevention of fires and explosions in wood processing and woodworking facilities. OSHA also lists NFPA 664 among the consensus standards addressing combustible dust hazards. US Duct systems are designed with awareness of applicable OSHA and NFPA standards. In practice, that shapes four parts of the system:

  • Duct construction. Smooth, noncombustible metal duct with tight joints limits dust buildup and leaks.
  • Velocity. Branches and mains are sized to hold transport velocity, so dust does not settle and accumulate inside the duct.
  • Collector location. Indoor collector placement is restricted unless the collector has appropriate deflagration protection. We lay out collector location with this in mind.
  • Isolation. Isolation devices, such as no-return valves and abort gates, help keep a deflagration in the collector from traveling back through the duct into the plant.

A dust hazard analysis (DHA) for your facility defines the specific requirements. We engineer the ductwork and components to fit the protection strategy your DHA and your authority having jurisdiction call for.

THE Benefits

What to Expect From a Plant-Scale Sawdust Collection System

A sawdust collection system has to keep transport velocity high enough to hold combustible particulates in suspension across every branch and main, even with many machines running at once. Expect the following from a US Duct system:

  • Consistent suction at every running machine, not just the ones closest to the collector.
  • Less downtime. Pre-separation and quick-change hoppers cut bag changes and waste-handling time.
  • Faster installs. Clamp-together duct installs up to 70% faster than welded or flanged duct, with support from real people during the install.
  • Room to grow. Field-adjustable, reusable components let you add machines and reroute drops without re-piping the plant.
  • One source. Duct, hoods, separators, airlocks, hoppers and collectors are all made in the USA and engineered to work together.

US Duct designs, manufactures and delivers complete woodworking dust collection systems from the capture point forward. Every system accounts for machine type, material characteristics, facility layout and collection capacity.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Dust Collection in the Woodworking Industry: FAQs

What information do I need to get an accurate woodworking dust collection quote? ⌄
Send a dimensioned plant layout showing machine and collector locations, a list of machines with port counts and diameters, the material (for example dry hardwood, green wood or MDF) and the most machines that run at the same time. If you are reusing a collector, include its horsepower and fan curve. With that, we can return a 3D layout and an accurate quote for your woodworking dust collection system within 24 hours.
How do I calculate CFM requirements for a multi-machine woodworking system? ⌄
Multiply each machine port’s cross-sectional area (in square feet) by the required transport velocity, usually 4,000 to 4,500 FPM. A 6-inch port at 4,000 FPM needs about 785 CFM. Total system CFM is the sum of only the machines that run at the same time. Blast gates close the idle drops so the running machines keep their velocity.
What makes woodworking dust collection different from other industrial dust control applications? ⌄
One system has to move heavy chips and microscopic sanding dust at the same time. Wood dust is abrasive to duct walls, and it is combustible when suspended in air. That is why dust collection in the woodworking industry is governed by NFPA 664 and needs careful attention to velocity, duct construction and isolation.
How does NFPA 664 affect woodworking dust collection system design and component selection? ⌄
NFPA 664 shapes duct construction, collector placement and isolation. It calls for smooth, noncombustible metal duct to limit dust buildup. It restricts indoor collector placement without appropriate deflagration protection. And it calls for isolation devices, such as no-return valves and abort gates, to keep a deflagration from traveling back into the plant. US Duct designs with awareness of applicable OSHA and NFPA standards. Your facility’s dust hazard analysis sets the specific requirements.
Can US Duct design a system around an existing collector my customer already owns? ⌵
Yes. Send the existing collector’s horsepower, inlet and outlet diameters and fan curve. We design the new duct network to match that unit’s static pressure capacity and maintain proper transport velocities. If the collector is the bottleneck, we will say so and show the options.
What transport velocity is required for fine wood and MDF dust in ductwork runs? ⌄
Fine, dry wood dust needs a minimum of about 3,500 to 4,000 FPM to stay suspended. Heavy chips, damp or green wood waste and dense MDF dust need about 4,000 to 4,500 FPM to prevent settling and line blockages. We size every branch and main of a woodworking dust collection system to hold these velocities.
How does dealer pricing and quoting work for woodworking system projects? ⌄
Dealers send the plant layout and machine specs. US Duct uses DuctQuote to produce a 3D design, bill of materials, order of install and project quote, typically within 24 hours. Quotes include protected wholesale dealer margins, so dealers can bundle industrial dust collection systems for woodworking with their machinery sales and ship direct to the job site.
Is clamp-together duct suitable for an industrial woodworking dust collection system? ⌄
Yes. Clamp-together duct is the standard for most woodworking dust collection. It uses rolled-lip ends joined by gasketed clamps, installs up to 70% faster than welded or flanged duct, and is field-adjustable when machines move. Standard gauges are 18 to 24, with heavy Gauge up to 10 for green wood and abrasive material. For large-diameter mains, flanged ductwork is available.
